One thing to note on golf watch accuracy before jumping in further. Although these are premium devices, it is important to temper expectations on the performance.

I have tried a lot of different golf tracking systems and every single one of them missed shots or showed the wrong yardage on occasion. Some are worse than others, but the point is that none of them are perfect.

It’s important to know that up front to set expectations properly. There are too many variables involved for there never to be hiccup. However, the best watches (and trackers) rarely are wrong and add to a ton of enjoyment to your game.

There are not many golf watch designs that are exclusively for women. As a result, there will likely be tradeoffs to get the golf features you want. Most golf watches have more of a rugged design in a bigger case and are unisex designs.

The good news is that there are tons of features packed into these golf watches so you will get good use from them. Let’s start with features you should be looking for–specifically golf features.

Golf Watch GPS Functionality

For a woman’s golf watch (or for men), GPS is mandatory. The good news is that all of these watches come with GPS, so you can expect that to be included.

The amount of golf features vary by manufacturer, rather than model of watch (for the most part). At the core, they all use GPS to track how far targets are from you on the course.

When you have a GPS device attached to your bag, it can be a pain to carry it with you around the green. The same goes for a rangefinder. One of the best features of a golf watch is that you always have the yardage with you.

That is a big difference between a golf watch and other types of distance measuring devices. Here are some golf-specific features to look for:

Shot Tracking

There are 2 types of shot trackers; watch-based and club-based trackers. Club-based trackers have a distinct advantage but require additional equipment.

Watch-Based Shot Tracking

Watch-based trackers use the watch to capture when you hit a ball and then assign a club based on your average distances.

But how do these watches know when a ball is hit?

Golf watches offering this feature use a built-in accelerometer to detect the impact of the swing. The accelerometer is a sensor that measures the acceleration of the watch. When it detects the sudden acceleration associated with a golf swing, it triggers the watch to start recording data.

This data can then be used to calculate various metrics, such as club head speed and ball travel distance. This can be useful, but there are a few things to be aware of.

• Post round editing – The data requires you to do quite a bit of editing after your round to ensure accuracy (such as correct clubs that were hit, missed shots, etc.
• Putts & Chips are not tracked – Watch shot trackers do not pick up the putting or chipping stroke (it is not forceful enough for the sensor to accurately track)

Club Trackers That Use A Watch

Club-based trackers require a small device to be attached on the grip to each club. Club trackers can then use a watch to sync with the club tracker after recording a shot.

This is the most accurate setup if you want a solution that automatically tracks your clubs & putting/chipping.

This will be just a brief overview of Arccos and is solely looking at how it integrates with a golf watch. Today, the only watch that can be used with Arccos is an Apple Watch. If you don’t have an Apple Watch (and don’t want one, you can skip this section).

The Arccos system consists of small sensors that screw into the grip on each club. The sensors then connect to a phone, a device attached to your belt called the “Arccos Link”, or an Apple Watch (you need only 1 of the 3).

In the case of the Apple Watch, when you swing, the sensor transmits data about the shot back to the Apple Watch. The Apple Watch then syncs with your Arccos iPhone app and you get all of your shot data.

The Garmin Approach CT10 is a set of sensors that connect to almost any Garmin watch.

It is the same as the Arccos system in which small sensors screw into the grip on each club. The sensors then connect to a Garmin watch that has the golf app (and functionality built-in).

It works just like Arccos in that when you swing, the sensor transmits data about the shot back to the Garmin watch. The Garmin watch then syncs with the Garmin Golf app on your phone and you get all of your shot data.

Full Hole Overview

Full hole overview shows you a visual of the hole you are playing to give you an idea of where the hazards are and the shape of the hole.

Typically, you can click to move your distance marker anywhere on the hole outline.

In addition, many golf watches show you the distance to hazards and the carry distance over them.

Scorecard Functionality (with statistics)

This features allows you to keep score with your golf watch. Some will do this automatically (relying on shot detection). Others require you to manually input the data after each hole.

Movable Pin (on green)

Moving the pin gives you the ability to tap the screen and drag the pin to the proper location it is at on that day.

This is especially important if the pin is tucked and you need to know precisely how much room you have to work with.

Although, my recommendation would be that this is not a deal-breaker. Almost every golfer out there would shoot lower scores by playing to the center of the green most of the time. However, on occasion this is a nice feature to have.

Slope-Compensated Distances

Most laser rangefinders on the market today come with a feature called “slope.” Slope compensates for the elevation change between you and the flagstick.

Certain Golf watches also include this feature. Here’s how it works.

For example, let’s say you are standing on a hill and looking down at the flagstick. The golf watch will give you the distance to the flagstick, but it will also take into account the fact that you are standing on a hill.

This is where slope comes in. Slope will give you the adjusted distance to the flagstick, taking into account the elevation change.

Slope is a great feature to have if you are playing on a course with a lot of elevation changes. It can help you make more accurate shots and lower your score.

You need to remember to disable that functionality if you play in a tournament though.

Green Undulation

There are golf watches that have mapped out the undulations on the greens and can display this on the watch. These are displayed as a heatmap and also include arrows showing the direction of the breaks.

This can be incredibly useful for golfers that struggle to read breaks or are playing on an unfamiliar course. Thing of it as a greens book on your watch.

Smart Caddie Features

Golf watches employ this functionality differently but the concept is the same. Your golf watch gives you “advice” and insights on your game that you use while at the course.

The types on information you can expect to see are:

• Club Selection – what club you should hit (based on statistics collected from your past shots
• True Distance – slope-adjusted distances based on elevation & current wind
• Green Maps – the undulation on a green and arrows showing the break of a putt

Post-Round Analysis

All Golf watches have some type of analytics available via an app. This allows you to see stats on your game such as FIR, GIR, putts, sand saves, up & downs, shot dispersion, & more.

The better apps will show you strokes gained information and what areas you need to work on to improve.

Also, if you are some form of club-tracking enabled you can see average distance by club. Although you need to remember this is total distance (including run out).

It slightly changes some of the functionality on the watch, but for anyone who needs this it is game-changing.

Watch Display

Arguably the most important component of golf watch is the display. This is what you notice 1st on a golf watch and if you want to use your watch off the course this will be very important.

If you are strictly using your watch for golf, this may not matter as much to you. However, it is still important to understand the options when you are reviewing golf watches.

Garmin watches all use Transflective memory-in-pixel (MIP) displays. The Garmin watches are focused on activities and these displays do really well in sunlight with incredible battery life.

Display Types

There are three main types of smartwatch displays: transflective memory-in-pixel (MIP), AMOLED, and LCD. Each has its advantages and disadvantages that make it better or worse for different purposes.

Transflective memory-in-pixel (MIP)

Transflective memory-in-pixel (MIP) displays are made up of tiny mirrors that reflect light to the viewer. They are very efficient, use very little power, and can be easily read in direct sunlight. However, they are not as bright as other types of displays and can suffer from ghosting – images that appear to linger on the screen after they have been removed.

AMOLED

AMOLED displays use an active matrix of organic light-emitting diodes. They are very bright and have excellent contrast, but they use more power than MIP displays. They also tend to be more expensive.

LCD

LCDs use a liquid crystal layer between two glass plates. They are less expensive than AMOLED displays, but they use more power and can suffer from ghosting and glare.

How Apps Work With A Golf Watch
