The golf glove is perhaps the most underestimated piece of equipment in the game of golf.
Your hand is the only point-of-contact with the golf club, thus making it extremely important. However, a lot of golfers don’t spend money on a premium golf glove. This can actually cost you strokes, or at least enjoyment of the game.
Read more to understand why a premium golf glove is important to your enjoyment of the game.
WHY You Need A Premium Golf Glove
There is a massive difference between premium golf gloves and cheaper golf gloves. Typically, the cheapest options are synthetics which can be more durable but fail in overall performance.
Leather golf gloves, specifically Cabretta leather, are the best option for most golfers. Excellent grip is incredibly important to the golf swing, and Cabretta leather provides the best grip (and feel).
How Grip Affects Your Golf Game
- You only hold the club with the last 2-3 fingers in the left hand (for right-handed golfers) & need a glove that won’t slip with this limited contact
- A lighter grip means more speed & control
- Inferior gloves cause you to hold too tight taking away speed & control
- Every mph of club head speed equals about 2.5 yards of carry
- Gripping the club in hot & humid conditions is even more important and you need a glove that performs well in these conditions
How an Inferior Golf Glove Costs You Strokes
When a golf club slips in your hands, it can have several negative effects on your shot:
- Loss of control: When the club slips, you lose control over the clubface, making it difficult to execute your intended shot. This lack of control can result in mishits, such as thin or fat shots, slices, or hooks.
- Inconsistent ball flight: The slipping of the club can lead to variations in the impact position, altering the angle at which the clubface strikes the ball. As a result, you may experience inconsistent ball flight with decreased distance, loss of accuracy, and a lack of control over the shot shape.
- Decreased power and distance: A slipping club can result in a loss of power and reduced distance on your shots. Without a secure grip, you may not be able to generate optimal clubhead speed or efficiently transfer power through the swing.
- Impact on swing tempo and timing: The unexpected slip of a golf club can disrupt your swing tempo and timing. To compensate for the loss of control, you may instinctively adjust your swing, leading to rushed or manipulated swings. This can result in further inconsistencies and decreased shot quality.
To prevent a golf club from slipping, it’s important to maintain a proper grip throughout the swing. Using a high-quality golf glove can help ensure a secure and comfortable grip, reducing the risk of the club slipping in your hands.
Leather vs Synthetic Golf Gloves
Leather golf gloves are the best option for 99% of golfers and can actually help your lower your scores. But what are the differences between Cabretta leather golf gloves and cheaper synthetic blends?
Cabretta Leather
Cabretta leather gloves, have incredible grip, are very soft, and are lightweight. They typically fit really well and give you the ability to have a very light grip on the club.
Leather gloves often offer good breathability, which can help keep the hands cool and dry during play and make them suitable for prolonged use on the golf course.
When you combine the above with perforated stretch zones, you get the best of all worlds.
Synthetic Gloves
Synthetic gloves can be more durable and resistant to wear and tear compared to leather gloves (although I have found the opposite myself).
However, synthetic golf gloves are often considered less ideal for warm weather conditions compared to leather. They typically do not breathe well, thus leaving your hands wet very quickly in warm or humid conditions.
In addition, the materials are rougher and you do not get as good of a grip as leather. You may have to hold the club tighter (which is REALLY bad for club head speed).
They also have problems with fit. Leather molds to your hand, but synthetics cannot mold like a premium leather golf glove. If you get a poor fit, and then moisture in the glove, you will get irritation if not blisters.
Conclusion
For any golfer seeking to enjoy the game more, and improve their grip (and hopefully scores), there is no substitute for a premium golf glove. It is absolutely worth spending money on to eliminate any inconsistencies a poor glove can cause.
